By scott gallagher A brutal fact of starting your own business is that most similar business models are doomed to failure. Unfortunately, a very large percentage of small businesses struggle to get up and running, only to see failure within their first year. Of those businesses that were lucky enough to make it through their first year, about 60% will fail in the following three to four years after that.
However, there are some commonalities amongst the successful businesses that should give you clues as to where you should concentrate your efforts. Foremost among these is a strong and concrete marketing plan for the small business. That plan needs to include a strong aspect of internet marketing specifically for small business. A lack of planning or vision in this area is one of the most common causes for the majority of small business failure. It is true that you have access to far more customers, a more level playing field and less overhead if you enter the online world. Yet, now more than ever, you need to have a structured marketing plan in place and ready for your business to execute. The reason that a small business internet marketing plan poises your business for success far better than a traditional business model is because of the overhead involved in online marketing. This is a fraction of what it would cost you to promote your business through more traditional models, and with potential profits much greater. One of the most important keys to a successful plan is commitment. One of the nicer aspects of this is that, with the lower costs of online marketing, it is much easier to stay committed to a marketing campaign that isn't showing instant results but which may end up paying dividends in the long run. Also, the fact that online marketing will not cost you the small fortune that you will likely end up paying for print advertisements is definitely going to allow you to venture further and allow you time to see your results. Good small business internet marketing doesn't mean that you have to become a guru, yourself, in each of the potential methods of promoting your business online. However, you do need to gain a passing familiarity with all of the different ways of marketing a business on the internet. Why? Well, simply because each of these areas will be the ones that are ultimately going to help your business to either flourish or fail. Once you have a general idea of the means available to you, you can begin outsourcing the giants share of the work and simply monitor your marketing package as a whole to see how it performs for you in practice as well as in theory. Online marketing methods that you are going to have to consider include social networking and social media marketing, email advertising, buying paid ads online, pay per click marketing and search engine optimization. Any of these methods in isolation may not provide the results you're looking for but, when operating in tandem, they can prove to be a powerful marketing package for the small business.
